There are 3 principles of business analysis that distinguish Gensa's technique:
- Focus on Deliverables First – Generally speaking, the purpose of every business process is to produce a deliverable. The nature of that deliverable may differ from business to business; it could be a report or a fully populated data store, a piece of software or a physical product. Similarly every deliverable (output) requires some set of precursor deliverables (inputs). By establishing a chain of deliverables it is very easy to quickly produce a wireframe process; the result is similar to a data flow.
- Start at the End – if the purpose of every business process is to produce a deliverable, identifying that deliverable should be straightforward and simple. Beginning with the final result, one then determines the inputs required to produce that result. Each of those inputs is itself the product (or deliverable) of a process, which requires inputs. Work from the back to the logical start of the chain of deliverables.
- Determine the “How” After Determining the “What” – Once a wireframe of deliverables is established and there is a relatively clear path from one or more start points to the desired endpoint, begin identifying the processes required to transform inputs into outputs.
